New Forum to Enlighten Consumers on Financial Issues
May 7, 2008
The current crisis that has been taking a serious toll on the U.S. economy and the international financial market has brought to the forefront a not too surprising reality - a vast portion of the American population is highly illiterate when it comes to dealing with personal financial matters. This financial illiteracy cuts across every stratum of society and has very little to do with individual intelligence or academics. There is a deficit in programs, efforts and intentional well directed activities to educate the American public on basic issues of money management, assets and liabilities, investments and savings, credit and debt management, home acquisition, home financing and home ownership.
The result is that millions of individuals and families are daily challenged to making serious financial decisions with very little knowledge as to the real ramifications. As a consumer driven society, we are constantly being enticed to acquire things and the latest gadgets that skillful marketers determine that we need and can not live without. They appeal to our greed, our insecurities, our need for approval, recognition, significance; our natural fears and our wants. We are constantly bombarded with the allurement to just get it now and deal with the matter of payment later.
Without financial savvy and the discipline of deferring instant gratification, many individuals barter their peace of mind and financial security for acquiring things that they do not really need and which they can not afford. They acquire huge debts that reduce the quality of family life that often result in insolvency and the loss of home, income and security.
The Consumer Financial Education Forum has an ambitious agenda. Its aim is to help enlighten consumers by shining some light on financial issues that are important to families and individuals. It intends to offer educational information that will help consumers to make informed decisions on issues affecting their financial affairs. It has no intention to promote or market specific financial products or investments but to focus its efforts on promoting basic financial education and any informational product or service that is so targeted.
The forum intends to also offer the opportunity for readers to freely exchange ideas, information and to share tips with other readers through our discussion forum. We encourage you to visit often and engage in the discussion, ask questions and share your knowledge and experience. This is a community in the making and you are welcome to be an active member. We encourage you to register so you may be kept informed on the latest information that might just be what “the doctor orders for your financial health”.
Before you leave this page, just register your name and email contact information and we promise to keep you informed. We also promise that your information will not be sold to others for any marketing purposes.
